Standard-gauge rails, like those the Rio Grande Scenic railroad operates on, allow for a more comfortable, smoother ride than narrow gauge rails, and were the most common type in use in the early-to-mid 1900s – the heyday of steam locomotives in America and the heyday of railroads in the San Luis Valley.
